Choosing Curtain Fabric for Your Home
Choosing curtain fabric is about more than finding a colour you like. The best fabric works with the light, the architecture, the furniture and the way the room is lived in.
Start with the mood of the room
A calm bedroom, a polished sitting room and a hardworking family space all ask different things of a fabric. Some rooms need softness and quiet texture; others can carry pattern, stronger colour or a more tailored finish.
Before choosing, it helps to think about how the room should feel: restful, warm, formal, relaxed, layered or simple.
Light, colour and pattern
Natural light changes fabric. A colour that feels gentle on a sample can look much cooler in a north-facing room or much stronger in direct sun.
Plain fabrics can feel calm and architectural, while patterned fabrics can bring character and movement. Texture, weave and softness all affect how the curtain will hang, and how much presence it will have in the room.
Practical considerations
Durability, privacy, warmth, blackout and lining all matter. A fabric may be beautiful, but it still needs to suit the scale of the window and the way the curtains will be used.
Seeing fabrics in the home is often far more useful than choosing from a screen. The room’s light, wall colour, flooring and furniture will all influence the final decision.
